| Meer info | Translated from Purchas (The Voyage of Captaine John Davis to the Easterne India, Pilot in a Dutch ship, written by Himselfe). In 1598 Davis sailed with the second expedition of Cornelis de Houtman to India. In Aceh Houtman was murdered and his brother Frederick de Houtman captured. Davis could with 2 others, catch the ship and escape. They sailed back to Cape of Good Hope and finally to Middelburg (arrival in July 1600). Davis’ Journal of this trip is very important for the history of the first Dutch expeditions preceding the VOC. In 1601-1603 Davis again sailed to the East, this time in the expedition of James Lancaster, and in 1604 under Edward Michelborne. During this last trip he was around Bintang (Sumatra) slain in a conflict with Japanese pirates. |
