The novel tells the story of Gerard, a young scribe and scholar in the 15th century, who falls in love with Margaret and faces personal and religious struggles that ultimately lead him to enter a monastery. Their son is eventually revealed to be Erasmus, though his name is only briefly mentioned at the end of the novel. While Reade researched the historical setting in great detail and aimed for accuracy in portraying the period, the story is ultimately fictionalized. Reade called it "a monk's love story" and described it as romance based on fact. |
