Sarawak was ruled by the British Rajah James Brooke, a former military officer of the East India Company, had visited the territory (now part of Malaysia) in 1839 and assisted the sultan in suppressing a revolt. He was rewarded in 1841 by being granted the position of rajah of Sarawak. His son Charles became Rajah and in 1917 his son, Vyner Brooke, the last White Rajah of the kingdom of Sarawak, Borneo. In 1911 Vyner married Sylvia Brett. She was the grand daughter of Sylvain van de Weyer (founder of Belgium). |
