| Meer info | A fascinating 1868 first edition copy of one of the first great woman travellers. Beautifully illustrated with 15 full-page plates, and 20 woodcut engravings. Published by T. Nelson and Sons, London, 1868. Publishers’ original green boards with embossed gilding panelled boards. Gilt vignette, and lettering on upper board, and on spine. Ida Laura Pfeiffer (1797 –1858), was one of the first female travellers, travelling worldwide on her own to explore, write and as an ethnographer. Her journals were translated into seven languages. She journeyed an estimated 32.000 kilometres by land and 240.000 kilometres by sea through Southeast Asia, the Americas, Middle East, and Africa, including two trips around the world from 1846 to 1855. She was one of the first female explorers, whose popular books were translated into seven languages. She was a member of geographical societies of both Berlin and Paris, but not of the Royal Geographical Society in London due to her sex. Condition: Solid and well bound volume. Light wear to boards’ corners with rubbing to head of spine. Internally fresh. Pages are clean with very vague foxing marks on a few pages. All illustrations are present and bright. |
