| Meer info | The very scarce and fascinating first edition. The preface is dated March 1850 and a note refers to the "Athenaeum" dated December 1851. The book is sound and complete with all plates, free of inscriptions and notes. Rebacked with use of original backstrip. The olive green blind stamped boards are well preserved. All illustrations are present and bright.19,5 x 13,2 cm, Ida Laura Pfeiffer (1797 –1858), was one of the first female travellers, travelling worldwide on her own to explore, write and as an ethnographer. Her journals were translated into seven languages. She journeyed an estimated 32.000 kilometres by land and 240.000 kilometres by sea through Southeast Asia, the Americas, Middle East, and Africa, including two trips around the world from 1846 to 1855. She was one of the first female explorers, whose popular books were translated into seven languages. She was a member of geographical societies of both Berlin and Paris, but not of the Royal Geographical Society in London due to her sex. |
