| Meer info | for, however inconvenient or downright inadequate existing editions may, they do at least exist - as far as Smaragdus ic concerned, the absence of any complete edition has acted up until now both as a deterrent and as the justification for this neglect. He has suffered more than most grammarians from the pernicious nineteenth-century practice of publishing extracts, a practice which tells us more about the excerpters than about Smaragdus. The publication of this edition makes available the first complete text of the grammar. The edition is based on unpublished material by Adele Kibre, one of Charles Beeson’s pupils at Chicago, who completed her dissertation in 1930. Although her conclusions as to the manuscript relationships are described as still valid (p. V), her work in fact included a full collation of only two to the twenty manuscripts, leaving Holtz and Löfstedt a large amount of collating to do.' (VIVIEN LAW in Vivarium, 1989, p.77). |
