The author points out that in general Vergil’s pictures of scenery are few and that he contents himself rather, following the example of Homer in the catalogue of B, with the use of pictorial epithets. The book ends with an examination of Vergil’s catalogues as compared with that of Silius Italicus in book 8. For all three Herr Rehm sees a common source in Varro, ‘Antiq. humanae’, book XI.’ (M.
