Meer info five essays are quite outside this field (the hitherto unpublished ‘Bemerkungen zu Pindar’, some very early notes on Herodotus ii, ‘Anfänge des gr. Naturrechts’, ‘Tragic Heracles’, and a note on Archilochus fr. 2 D.), and Ehrenberg is always striving to discover in the language and institutions of the Greeks the real quality of their political life. First we have five general essays on Greek civilisation and history, among which ‘The Fourth Century B.C. as Part of Greek Hisotry’ is another piece previously unpublished, Six essays on the Polis, of which the most notable are perhaps ‘When dit the Polis Rise?’ And ‘Eunomia’, are succeeded by (…) two essays on Sparta (…) and then by several on Athens. Of these the articles ‘Zur älteren athenischen Kolonisation’, ‘Thucydides on Athenian Colonisation’, and ‘The Foundation of Thurii’ constitute a triad fundamental for the understanding of Athenian settlements abroad, while in ‘The Origins of Democracy’ he uses with great effect the same technique in tracing the implications of language as in his discussion of the origin of the Polis itself. His exact analysis of texts and the caution with which he puts his inferences are examples to us all. (…) His studies of Alexander are represented especially by ‘Alexander und Ägypten’ (which contains in my view the best treatment of the origins of Alexander-worship) and the illuminating piece on ‘Pothos’, besides a study of Alexander’s sacrifices at the mouth of the Indus. (…) The book is an enduring memorial (…) to the debt we owe to Ehrenberg’s work.’ (P.A. BRUNT in The Classical Review (New Series), 1966, pp.93-94).
