As the only Flemish woman known to have focussed on still-life in the early 17th century and one of the few women to dedicate her professional life to painting in early modern Europe, Clara Peeters encountered limitations because of her gender. Alejandro Vergara-Sharp is Senior Curator of Flemish and Northern European Painting at Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid.
