| Meer info | With this exhibition catalogue, the Bergen-Belsen Documentation Centre presents a highly informative and moving testimony to the crimes of National Socialism in Lower Saxony. Based on survivor testimonies, diaries, films and photographic documentation, and archival artefacts, it provides a multi-perspective account of Bergen-Belsen as POW camp (1940-1945), concentration camp (1943-1945) and displaced persons camp (1945-1950). The personal narratives and world?wide sourced visual material allow readers to engage with a painful past even without visiting the documentation centre. This volume is the official catalogue of the permanent exhibition at the Documentation Centre Bergen?Belsen. It is structured chronologically and thematically into three major phases: Kriegsgefangenenlager (1940-1945): details the transformation of former Wehrmacht barracks into Stalag XI?C/311 housing French, Belgian and later predominantly Soviet prisoners-of-war; covering conditions, mortality (tens of thousands of deaths), camp layout and administration. Konzentrationslager (1943-1945): examines the SS takeover in April 1943, the establishment of the "exchange camp" for Jews, followed by the mass deportations and influx of sick and non?working prisoners; the outbreak of typhus, starvation, overcrowding, and ultimate liberation by British forces on 15 April 1945. Estimated death tolls exceed 50.000. Displaced Persons Camp (1945-1950): describes how the former Wehrmacht barracks hosted first Polish then Jewish displaced persons; the formation of self-administered Jewish committees, demographic dynamics, schools, marriages and births, emigration waves to Israel, USA, Canada, leading to final dissolution in September 1950. The catalogue includes testimonies, diaries, film and photo documentation, artefacts and exhibition plans. It combines historical analysis with personal voices, bridging scholarly research and public history. |
