Featuring essays and representative reproductions, it highlights figures such as Antonin Artaud, Jean Dubuffet, Alberto Giacometti and others through portraits and concise essays. Paris Post War: Art and Existentialism 1945-55 is a richly illustrated exhibition catalogue published to accompany the exhibition of the same name at the Tate Gallery (9 June-5 September 1993). The book explores the crucial period in Paris immediately after the Second World War, when existentialist ideas permeated the arts and a fruitful cross-pollination occurred between disciplines such as visual art, literature, film, music, philosophy, and photography. Key figures such as Antonin Artaud, Jean Dubuffet, Alberto Giacometti, Francis Gruber, Jean Hélion, Henri Michaux, Pablo Picasso, Germaine Richier, Bram van Velde, and Wols are featured, each accompanied by a portrait and an essay, and framed with color and black-and-white illustrations. It shows how these artists - often engaging with existential themes - gave shape and meaning to the intense post-war reality in Paris. |
