| Meer info | This two-volume catalogue offers the first comprehensive overview of Western medieval illuminated manuscripts held in the colleges of Cambridge University and the Fitzwilliam Museum (excluding those in the University Library). It presents manuscripts from the Frankish kingdoms, the Northern Netherlands, Germany, the Meuse region, the Southern Netherlands, Bohemia, Hungary, Austria and surrounding regions. Each manuscript is described with detailed codicological data, provenance history, text content, and especially full documentation of illuminations, decorations and ornamentation. Every entry is accompanied by full-colour reproductions of miniatures and decorated pages, making the volumes an indispensable reference work for scholars and collectors. Illuminated Manuscripts in Cambridge collates and catalogues hundreds of medieval manuscripts from diverse European regions housed at Cambridge. Volume 1 covers manuscripts from the Frankish kingdoms, the Netherlands and Germany, Bohemia, Hungary and Austria, offering detailed descriptions of their script, illumination style, decoration and historical context. Volume 2 continues with manuscripts from the Meuse region and the Southern Netherlands. For each manuscript, the authors provide codicological information - such as date, place of origin, binding, text type - as well as provenance and ownership history. The work emphasises the illuminated content: miniatures, historiated initials, decorated borders and ornamentation. Full-colour photographs accompany almost every entry, allowing visual study of style, iconography and technique. The catalogue also includes iconographic indices and bibliographical references, making it a rich tool for art-historical, palaeographical and manuscript-studies research. |
