Prague had one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe and was particularly in the second half of the century subject of acculturation and assimilation, adapting mainly to the German language and culture. In 1850 about 7% of the students at the Univ. of Prague were Jewish. After the separation of a German and a Czech university in 1890 nearby half of the students of the German univ. were Jewish. Kaempf's inaugural lecture presents a programme of science of Judaism by giving prior attention to Jewish literature in Arabic Spain. The lecture was printed by M.I. Landau. The author notes in the introduction, that regrettably the printer did not have Arabic type and was forced to print the Arabic in Hebrew characters. |
