The book became a scandal since she wrote about her own desires and sexuality, about her desire to live in a polygamous relationship instead of the more conventional monogamy. Since I belong to the generation that grow up with sexually liberated women in portrayed in TV-shows like Sex and the City & Girls there's nothing new with a man eating character that likes facials at Fifth Avenue and travels frequently to NYC. But I can only imagine how provocative this book was back in 1978. But thanks to these pioneers alike Suzanne Brøgger the women of my generation has more freedom to do whatever they like. I read Creme Fraiche as an adventure book for grownup women. The story included endless sexual encounters, travels and on point observations about women's role in society. These sharp, very intellectual observations makes the book quite demanding to read, the font-size can't be bigger than 4 and the story doesn't have any logic or chronological order, it's more a stream of consciousness. Still I like her appetite for life and to learn everything from it. She wants to be alive, on the move, never stagnate. She is not afraid of any kind expectations. This book is limitless. Brøgger says no to the great, individualist love, to marriage, to the nuclear family, and to children – since the Western world no longer has a need for its children and according to her we therefor need more homosexuals. She is strongly against marital monogamy, which women “are abandoned to”. Brøgger continues to state that as a rule, women would rather have a husband than a life. However, according to Brøgger many things would be different if only women would realize their erotic potential, “which simply means having a direct relationship with the world".Women can do whatever they want, and the women’s movement, in Suzanne Brøgger’s opinion, is not about liberation but rather “the fear of floating freely in empty space”, which is indeed a beautiful thought. The objective in Creme Fraiche is to remain a daughter and a child. To avoid, at any price, becoming a woman and an adult. The world is a playground and life is a playful challenge for the narrator, who is driven by “a powerful desire for freedom teasingly accompanied by the absolute opposite”. Prijs €6,50 |
