| Meer info | Borderland farming presents the latest insights into the possibilities and limitations of agriculture in the Kromme Rijn area and in the Eifel, during the Roman Period and Early Middle Ages. In these two regional studies,all available geological, archaeological and ecological evidence is brought together, and with the aid of models the potential productive capacity of these regions is calculated. Besides the book contains integrated and archaezoological studies not only of the villa excavations at Voerendaal-Ten Hove and Maasbracht, but also of the Roman-period and/of Early Medieval sites of Maastricht, Houten-Tiellandt and Wijk bij Duurstede-De Horden. As part of this research, the author introduces a new method for making a rough inventory of the botanical macro-remains of seeds and fruits. From this study it emerges that the two investigated regions differ in term of arable farming methods and range of food crops, irrespective of production level, period or region, the farmers - in contrast to their modern counterparts - produced the full range of food products that they needed for their own use and consumption.
