| Meer info | World-wide, international current affairs in the nineties seem to be increasingly dominated by ethnonationalist conflicts. Even in Europe, despite the attempt at Union, ethnic fragmentation is a highly topical issue. In the last five years, fifteen new European states have been created on the basis of claims by previously little known ethnonational groups. This book explains these developments. It examines the cases of four European states (Bulgaria, the former Czechoslovakia, Belgium and Finland) and focuses particularly on the impact of political systems on the development of ethnonational relations. The main differences between these four political systems lie in their geographical and political/economic dimensions (federalised versus unitary and communist versus liberal- democratic). The comparison helps clarify developments in individual cases, such as Czechoslovakia's Velvet Divorce in 1992 or the anti- Turkish terror in Bulgaria in the 1980´s. The author demonstrates the need for this type of research to back our urgent attempts to counter the intractable and often violent nature of, ethnonational conflict. |
