Meer info Birds of the family Rallidae, collectively known as rails, include coots, rails and gallinules, and are found in almost all parts of the world. They are though among the least known and the most elusive of any bird species. This book, beautifully illustrated with 41 full-page colour plates by renowned bird portraitist J. Fenwick Lansdowne, presents the definitive study on rails. The author discusses the general characteristics, distribution , and evolution of this family of birds. Followed by a comprehensive treatment of the 129 known species of rails, with taxonomic keys, descriptions, life histories, courting behaviour, distribution, status of hundreds of subspecies, and numerous maps concerning distribution and habitat. An illustrated chapter on fossil rails, by Dr. Storres L. Olson, and an unusual selection of b&w photographs of these elusive birds in aviary and natural habitat conclude this study.
