Meer info Threatened with extinction, this unaltered, unabridged first Dover reprint of Research Report No.1 of the National Audubon Society (1942) presents a landmark study on the survival of North America’s largest woodpecker, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The result of three years of field work (1937-39) in the swampy forests of the southeastern U.S. gives a full account of the ecology and natural history of the species with details on every factor known to bear on it’s survival. General description of the species, original distribution pattern, history of disappearance and distribution as of 1940 are discussed. Population density, range of individual birds, food and feeding habits (major cause of decline), eggs, nesting, voice, reaction to human presence, care of young, causes of nesting failure, and much more is presented in this important monograph. The author concludes with an outline for both a general and specific program for conserving the Ivory-billed woodpecker. With 20 b&w photographs, 22 text-figures and maps, and 17 tables. Appendix with nomenclature, Index and Bibiography are provided.
