Guiseppe Arcimboldo became celebrated for his wonderfully eccentric and truly extraordinary portraits of fruits and vegetables, roots and animals which he composed into witty portraits and teasing allegorical allusions. Originally from Milan, Arcimboldo served at the court of three rulers of the Holy Roman Empire for some twenty-six years, not just as court painter but also as the powerful organizer and orchestrator of the lavish court entertainments so beloved of the time. Arcimboldo was a prolific artist but sadly many of his paintings have completely disappeared and only about twenty are known to survive.
