The history of the museum began in 1764, when Emoress Catherine II purchased 225 paintings to create for herself a personal gallery such as to rival the famous collections of other European monarchs. Today, the Hermitage is one of the largest museums in the world. With more than three and one-half million works of art and items of cultural value, among which many masterpieces of painting and sculpture, drawings and engravings, as well as priceless collections of decorative art objects, upwards of one million coins and medals, and documents of archaeological and historical/cultural interest.
