The Jacobites were active in the late 17th century and early 18th century - although there are still some Jacobites today - in the United Kingdom of England, Scotland and Wales. The movement also had a large following in Ireland. The movement arose when the Roman Catholic King James II fled from the English throne due to the invasion of the Protestant Dutch stadtholder William III of Orange in 1688, who was married to a daughter of James, Mary Stuart. James fled to France with Louis XIV to live in exile there until his death twelve years later. Many did not accept this, in their view, unjust deposition of the king, and supported the Stuarts. Particularly in Catholic Ireland, Jacobites supported their expelled king, but the Scottish Highlands were also hotbeds of Jacobitism.
