| Meer info | Zeer fraai geïllustreerd boek over de glascollectie van Dolf Schut, met glas daterend uit de 14de eeuw voor Christus tot de 8ste eeuw na Christus. Met per object uitgebreide beschrijvingen. The origins of my Ancient Glass Collection; acknowledgrnents In the first year of our marriage my wife Marya Prangers unwittingly awoke my interest in glass by presenting me with a 18thcentury Dutch glass. Later on, at one of the Delft Antique Fairs, we bought a small 'golden-brown' flask (no. 90), unaware that this unassuming object would- be the catalyst in the formation of a modest private collection of ancient glass. Although it inight appear inappropriate at this juncture to suggest that 1 drifted into collecting with no set goal or purpose, it now seems to me, as 1 reflect on the collection, that 1 began collecting very haphazardly disparate objects of visual beauty. After a lifetime of collecting 1 can say that I have experienced all the passions and obsessions of a collector and that the evolution of the collection charts the development of my taste and personality. My fascination for ancient glass deepened through museum visits, reading and tireless searching for objects to acquire. 1 came to realise that 1 was most moved by purity of form and concept: 1 prefer translucent glass and 1 am not so fond of iridescence or opacity (one of the reasons why there are few core-formed items). 1 have attenipted to form a collection with pieces representing different forms, colours, techniques and periods, covering the development of glass from the 14th century BC to the 8th century AD. Every piece has a personal significance for me and the collection as a whole has given me lasting pleasure, although latterly 1 have become concerned as to its future. 1 am pleased that the glasses will stay united on paper. Long ago my wife suggested that I compile a catalogue and so this book is published to document the result of collecting during thirty-eight years.I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and appreciation to Christopher Sheppard, who has advised me during many years and helped me to weed out and fill in gaps in the collection, enabling me to achieve the quality and diversity I was striving for; he encouraged me to publish this book.am very grateful to Frans Grummer, who kindly photographed the glasses, fulfilling all my expectations. His technical skill and taste I admire, while the tea-drinking sessions in between shoots I treasure. Originally I had thought that the photographs only needed a short description, but Martine Newby persuaded me otherwise by rewriting and extending my notes professionally, in a harmonious cooperation. I now feel the text matches the quality of the pictures and I would like to express my gratitude to her as well. Dolf Schut Authors'note We have tried to arrange the glass in chronologica order, while the descriptions are from left to right. The objects are shown at about actual size; differc sizes are mentioned. UnIess otherwise stated, all items are intact and ir. perfect condition. |
